The noise in the video has been digitally reduced to give you an idea of the sorts of results you could expect. Unfortunately, this is not a perfect science and your personal results could vary due to myriad reasons. However, we have found our customers prefer to hear a decibel reduction rather than read it!

Our MuteMat® 3 Plus system is a high-performing solution for soundproofing wooden floors, and this system provides noise control for both home and workplace.

It works to improve both airborne and impact noise issues while offering you something slim with an excellent performance against even the most intrusive noises. MuteMat® 3 is compressible, while still dense, offering both airborne and impact reduction, and is combined in a full system alongside Tecsound, a visco-elastic material that reduces vibration and breaks down sound energy by turning it into heat.

There is also Acoustic Mineral Wool to fit between the joists, at no less than 45kg per m3, and the use of isolation strips to provide a floating floor function. It is all these materials combined that make it ideal for those looking to achieve the best floor soundproofing possible, reduce clear conversation, bring levels of footsteps down to background noise levels and even use of HIFI audio devices. Although these are noise issues commonly associated with what you find at home, especially in dense-living, multiple dwellings, these disturbances are similar to those you hear in the workplace.

How to reduce walking noise from upstairs floors

You may love your neighbours but anyone can be driven to distraction when it comes to walking noise from upstairs floors. Perhaps you’re a landlord and your tenants are driving each other crazy with walking noise from upstairs floors.

Often the cheapest solution to this problem is to treat the noise at its source rather than soundproofing your ceiling so if you own both the flats or are on good terms with your neighbours you may consider a floor treatment rather than a ceiling treatment to reduce walking noise.

Yes when applied to the upstairs floor it will drastically reduce the walking noise from upstairs. MuteMat® 3 Plus is made of a four-ply structure that harbours dense, compressible and vibration-reducing acoustic properties to vastly improve soundproofing against impact noise issues, even for the heaviest of footing.

Footstep impact noise is reduced as is the movement of furniture or items being dropped – MuteMat® 3 Plus helps across the board. Depending on your ceiling structure, the level of soundproofing may vary slightly – for example on exposed floorboards above and exposed joists below, found in older structures especially Victorian, a drastic improvement would be made, but sound will often still be an issue with no ceiling in place. For common double plasterboard installations we look to see a 10-20dB reduction overall, 50-67% of noise issues reduced as an average.

Both MuteMat® 3 and Tecsound are dense and flexible, helping to drastically reduce airborne noise issues – Tecsound is also available in a range of upgrades up to Tecsound S100, a 10kg per m2 visco-elastic membrane. We would expect to find that noise issues such as conversation, television and low level music without the use of large high-fidelity systems are reduced to background noise levels in common double plasterboard structures with a 10dB reduction for around the middle to higher frequencies, 10dB is a 50% reduction in terms of loudness levels.

For small office environments we expect to see common noise issues akin to those found at home, conversation being a major one that can often distract from peoples performance or feel like others are in earshot of occasional private conversations, reducing their right to privacy.

Then we have larger environments which may contain open plan rooms with a range of teams all working out of one space with offices above or below. MuteMat® 3 is suitable for both these types of scenarios for both impact and airborne noise reduction.

If lifting floorboards is not possible, perhaps for Grade Listed status structures or simple unable to for other reasons – the omission of any sound insulation material in cavities can range from drastically affecting acoustic performance to only a little, but there are a lot of factors that can be at play to determine this also. It is not achieving the best acoustic performance possible, especially where airborne noise is concerned. Impact will see the biggest uplift of the two, but again, not to the same degree as when installed as a full soundproofing system.

Timber structures are subject to great changes over time, bending and buckling of joists, damp and settling in bowed positions – all give way to acoustic performances to some level, especially if there is creaking or movement in the joists, this makes it very difficult to determine Part E Building Regulations and its successful passing without knowing the structure currently. If a ceiling partition is already installed you may wish to carry out an acoustic test to survey the build and how it currently performs acoustically – if there is no ceiling partition or a single layer of plasterboard it would be best to install a suspended ceiling system below like the ones from the MuteClip® ceiling soundproofing range. With the planning of a new timber structure we can put together acoustic partition designs with your proposals in mind to look at estimated figures for both impact and airborne noise.

All rolled carpets can be pulled directly over MuteMat® 3 without any need for an over boarding, Carpet Gripper Strips will need to be fit around the perimeter of each room to raise the gripper rods to a more suited height. Hard floor finishes such as the wood of laminate or engineered would require a 6mm ply minimum bonded to MuteMat® 3 to act as a stable base, and lightweight and delicate floor finishes: parquet, luxury vinyl tile such as Karndean and Amtico, and ceramic tiling, for example, require a 9mm ply minimum, also bonded to act as a stable base.

Delivery information.

If you place an order online it’s likely we will call to discuss delivery to make sure it runs as smoothly as possible. Deliveries can arrive on a large vehicle. If there are access issues or HGV restrictions, please do let us know in advance as our website options are given in good faith of no restrictions. All of our deliveries must be signed for so you will need to ensure someone is on the premises on the day of delivery.
