How Soundproofing a Party Wall Works
Noisy neighbours can ruin a home and if you are attached via a party wall the noise can disturb everyday life easily. Luckily, soundproofing can resolve this issue and return your home to a peaceful and quiet place to live in.
Materials of high mass
This is key when soundproofing any party wall as high mass materials are able to reflect airborne noise. Airborne noise can be music, talking, TV, or any noise that travels via air. This is the most common complaint to have of your noisy neighbours, and there are only so many instances when you can ask them to ‘keep it down’. Luckily, our systems and in-house designed soundproofing panels, MuteBoards, incorporate top performing materials of high mass as standard.
Decoupling devices
Decoupling is highly recommended for party wall soundproofing as it gives you the best performance for space used. We have designed our own isolation clip, the MuteClip, which is simple to install and uses dual density silicone technology to resist sound vibrations. These can be attached directly to an existing wall or to a stud frame, making them versatile.
Absorption materials
If you have cavities from an existing or new stud frame, then it is an absolute must that these are filled with acoustic mineral wool. Acoustic mineral wool is insulation with a mass of 45kgm3 or more. This materials is commonly used in party wall soundproofing and helps reduce the transference of vibration energy from the party wall into your home.
Soundproofing system installation
This video shows our top performing party wall soundproofing system coming together. You can see the build up of materials which create this system and how they interact with each other. We have comprehensive installation guides with every system we provide, these can be found on the system page along with the data sheets for performance.
MuteBoards v/s Plasterboard
MuteBoards are a range of specially designed soundproofing party wall panels of two or more materials. Acoustic plasterboard is a single sheet material and will have a lower performance by comparison.
Why different materials matter
Different materials are able to reflect different soundwaves if they have different levels of mass. MuteBoards contain acoustic plasterboard and up to two layers of mass loaded vinyl which can perform well against noisy neighbours.
MuteBoards also contain closed cell foam which is able to flex and absorb sound vibrations passing through the party wall, similar to acoustic mineral wool.
What is MuteBoard 2?
Reduces airborne sounds
Suitable for a direct to wall or as part of a system
Slim-line at only 19mm thick
Simple installation with 9 fixings per board
Ready to skim plaster over
MuteBoard 2 is the first in our range and has two different layers of soundproofing materials. MuteBoard 2 soundproofing panel is made of a layer of acoustic plasterboard backed with a visco-elastic membrane. We generally recommend using MuteBoard 3 or MuteBoard 4 if you are looking for a single panel installation to brick but MuteBoard 2 is perfect for systems.
What is MuteBoard 3?
Reduces airborne sounds up to 45dB*
Suitable for a direct to wall or as part of a system
For brick walls or stud frames
Simple installation with 9 fixings per board
Ready to skim plaster over
MuteBoard 3 is a great choice for internal stud walls or as a direct to brick solution. We have two direct to wall systems using MuteBoard 3, making it a great thin party wall soundproofing solution. The addition of closed-cell foam is a brilliant barrier against noisy neighbours and helps to decouple the soundproofing partition from the existing party wall.
What is MuteBoard 4?
Highest performing single soundproof panel
Can achieve up to 49dB reduction*
Ideal for internal stud walls or systems
Simple installation with 9 fixings per board
Ready to skim plaster over
MuteBoard 4 is the highest performing party wall panel and comprises 4 different materials into a single sheet. The acoustic plasterboard with an added two layers of mass loaded vinyl reflect airborne noise and offer a high performance while keeping the panel slim at only 27mm thick. A layer of closed cell foam offers flex and absorption to vibrations coming through the existing wall making it ideal for noisy neighbours.
MuteClip Isolation System Explained
The MuteClip is an isolation clip which can decouple a new soundproofing partition and offer the best soundproofing results for space used. It’s easy to install, cost effective and slimline.
What is the MuteClip?
The isolation clip, MuteClip, is a small device that is attached directly to either brick work or a stud frame. The supporting structure makes contact with vibration absorbing silicone of two different densities. This massively reduces the sound vibrations which are able to pass into the clip itself.
The clip then supports a metal channel, into which, soundproof panels are screwed and the new partition created. For space used, the MuteClip is the most effective party wall soundproofing option.
How to install MuteClip and Channel
The MuteClip and Channel is easy to install either directly to a party wall, or, to a stud frame. We have detailed installation guides for all our systems to guide you from start to finish.
If you are struggling with noisy neighbors through your party wall, then a MuteClip system will offer the best sound reduction for space used. Unlike resilient bars, (what are these?), MuteClips are easy to install correctly and won’t allow the new partition to sag over time.
Top performing party wall soundproofing
dB reduction of up to 68dB
74mm + stud work
Most noise reduction for smallest footprint
Best for noisy neighbours
Our top performing party wall soundproofing system is the MuteClip Double Stud. This uses the MuteClip and channel on a new, independent stud frame to decouple the soundproofing partition and attain amazing results.
