Gym Soundproofing testing methodology

It might surprise you to learn there is currently no set standard for measuring the effectiveness of soundproofing in gyms. Unfortunately, this means you will see inconsistencies between different companies’ offerings. With this in mind, we wanted to be clear about our testing methodology.

We certainly didn’t want to ‘go easy’ on ourselves, we feel it’s important to get our tests as close to customer expectations as possible. We have taken guidance from The Institute of Noise consultant’s PropPG gym acoustics paper to advise this methodology. If you would like to read more about their guidance you can read their paper here.

We opted to test our impact weight drops from the partition below our testing room. Others may opt to test from partitions above or in adjacent rooms. We chose this as this is the ‘worst case scenario’ our customers may face. If it can work in the toughest scenario we’re confident it will be highly effective in the other environments described. Of course, there’s always the option to carry out on-site testing at your gym. This means you can be confident that your chosen solution will suit the type of exercise and specific noise problem in your space. If this is of interest click here to arrange testing.

In line with the weight range recommended by The Institute of Noise Consultants, we opted for a 24kg weight drop from a height of 50cm. We carried out each drop test multiple times and took the worst-performing result (Lmax) from each of our drops to add to our data set. As a testing principle, we choose not to hide behind averages or cherry-picking good results. That way you can be sure these results are deliverable.

We’ve made 5 systems that can support your needs from minor issues to major concerns.

On the graph below you can see the results from our testing. This shows our results from the low-frequency end of the noise spectrum. This is important because this is the hardest type of noise to reduce (thuds from impact). Low-frequency/long-wavelength impact noise is the cause of the majority of gym noise complaints, whether direct complaints from neighbours or action from council officials.
