Many homes in the UK have rooms separated by a thin stud wall (especially upstairs bedrooms) fortunately the process of soundproofing these stud walls is quite simple.

Option 1 – Direct to wall soundproof panels

This is the cheapest and fastest way to soundproof an internal stud wall is to overboard your wall with soundproof panels. These panels consist of a layer of soundproof plasterboard backed with high-density or vibration-absorbing materials. If you want to maximise the performance of these panels it’s highly recommended while you’re working on the wall to remove the old plasterboard and install high-density soundproof mineral wool. This will have a noticeable difference in the performance.

Option 2 – Install a clip and channel system

This type of system works by installing sound isolation clips on the existing stud frame. These clips act as mini shock absorbers. To these clips you then inser channels these are metal tophat channels that clip perfectly into your mini shock absorbers. once your channels are in place you can install soundproof plasterboard directly to the channels. This creates a de-coupled wall that works great for preventing noise from travelling through the wall. This is the best soundproofing for when you have a loud noise issue.

Yes, direct to wall soundproofing panels perform well in a stud wall system. To get the most out of direct to wall soundproofing panels on a stud wall we recommend using acoustic mineral wool between your joists to boost the performance of the finished wall.

To soundproof a stud wall to a good level you should remove the old plaster and replace any insulation with acoustic mineral wool. You should then install acoustic plasterboard or to improve the performance more you can install soundproof panels.

If you want to soundproof your wall to a great standard you can install a clip and channel system. This type of system is built by installing mini shock-absorbing clips called MuteClips and then running metal channels through this array of clips. This creates a frame that soundproof plasterboard and other soundproof materials can be attached to. This is a highly effective way to soundproof a stud wall.

The very best soundproofing we offer for stud walls is the MuteClip double system. In this system, you remove the plasterboard from your stud wall and replace any insulation with high-density acoustic mineral wool.

Once you have completed this then you can install MuteClip sound isolation clips. Just think of these as an array of mini shock absorbers that help de-couple your new wall from your old wall. You then clip metal channels through these clips, and these channels create a frame. Your new isolated frame can have two layers of soundproof plasterboard and a layer of Tecsound vibration-dampening membrane attached to it.

This system can improve the soundproofing capability of your wall by 15dB (a huge reduction)
