The noise in the video has been digitally reduced to give you an idea of the sorts of results you could expect. Unfortunately, this is not a perfect science and your personal results could vary due to myriad reasons. However, we have found our customers prefer to hear a decibel reduction rather than read it!

Joist ceiling soundproofing to help level uneven joists while retaining the same performance as our standard MuteClip®. An upgrade to our MuteClip® XP Single for reducing airborne and impact noise.

MuteClip® XP Double is a popular option for projects that require a ceiling soundproofing solution that is both high performing and can accommodate varying joist depths as well as differing ceiling heights without resulting to additional joist levelling or ad-hoc methods of installation.

It creates fewer lesser points of contact with the joist ceiling using our MuteClip® XP which is composed of a dual-density rubber in a galvanised metal case that performs like a shock absorber and this is bolted to an extension bracket that allows for an additional 100mm of spacing for accommodating the joist heights. The MuteClip® Channel affixes to the MuteClip® XP and the new soundproof ceiling which is composed of two layers of dense Acoustic Plasterboard 15mm and Tecsound suspends away from the ceiling joists.

What this ultimately results in is a vastly improved reduction of airborne noise, especially in the more problematic lower to middle-lower frequencies, as well as reducing impact noise and other forms of light vibration.

The extended profile of the MuteClip® XP assists in creating a soundproof ceiling solution that can be built into uneven joist ceilings without the need for any structural alterations by fitting on the side of the joist and allowing for 100mm distance between two points. Not only is this a perfect way to not add installation costs to a final project, but it does not alter in acoustic performance, they are the same performance figures to the standard MuteClip® option. You will need to take care to make sure that the Acoustic Plasterboard layers are not in contact or too close to the joists at the final levelling as this could cause impact noise and vibration to travel into the board – reducing the ceilings isolation properties and performance.

All common household neighbour and internal noise issues that are often found to be problematic are reduced with our MuteClip® XP Double system. We would expect to see improvements for all impact and airborne noise issues to where they are all brought down to a background noise level – although Flanking Transmission down walls should also be addressed with a robust ceiling soundproofing solution in place, weakened stud frame walls and walls with dot and dab plasterboard fitting will leak sound. Hearing is also a subjective measurement into where sensitivities ranging from those stemming from medical conditions and other hearing or psychological ailments can also be at play in reviewing the soundscape.

When the assessment of conversion is taking place for single dwellings converted into multiple houses – there are a range of sound paths that require treatment, especially if no existing soundproofing has been put in place. It is therefore vital that adjacent walls are reviewed and addressed accordingly as a ceiling soundproofing solution will often be negated from these paths, and leading to a failure in acoustic testing. With these addressed the MuteClip® XP shows acoustic results of surpassing values across the board for Part E Building Regulations. For proposed timber structures that require approval against the acoustic values in Part E, we can create partition designs with your floor and ceiling structure in place to evaluate possible outcomes with impact and airborne noise.

Resilient Channels do not offer a ceiling levelling option like our MuteClip® XP does, which is a bonus for anyone looking to create a single ceiling structure that features structural twists and bends.

The importance of creating isolation gaps to reduce Flanking Transmission is significant here in that the Acoustic Plasterboard layers should not be in contact with the adjacent walls for any vibration detected in these areas will move back into the boards, short-circuiting the suspension provided by the MuteClip® XP and Channel. If the Acoustic Plasterboard layers are tightly abutted against the wall, it will also reduce the suspension by creating resistance – reducing the systems movement to dealing with impact noise and low frequencies.

The total thickness of Acoustic Mineral Wool relies on the thickness of joist – to which can vary depending on loading requirements and span of the room. A typical joist depth found in most residences of 2×8 inches or 50.8 x 203.2, so a total thickness of 150mm of Acoustic Mineral Wool should be installed. It is recommended to leave an air gap of at least 10mm from the MuteClip® Channel and the floor above, tightly compacting in additional Acoustic Mineral Wool or any other type of insulation will reduce the system’s performance.

For anything within the depth of the new soundproof ceiling – ceiling and wall features such as cornice, coving or non-structural ornamental features should be removed before installation and electronics – light fixtures, alarms or motion sensors, for example, should be disconnected and any wiring extended to accommodate new depths. Plasterboard or a Lath and Plaster ceiling would also need to be removed to allow the fitting of the MuteClip® XP.

If you place an order online it’s likely we will call to discuss delivery to make sure it runs as smoothly as possible. Deliveries can arrive on a large vehicle. If there are access issues or HGV restrictions, please do let us know in advance as our website options are given in good faith of no restrictions.
