MuteClip Double – Concrete Ceiling Soundproofing

NOISE REDUCTION

Hear the difference.

Play the video to hear the airborne sound difference before and after installing this system. For best results try to match the volume of the unreduced audio to the volume of the noise you’re able to hear.

The noise in the video has been digitally reduced to give you an idea of the sorts of results you could expect. Unfortunately, this is not a perfect science and your personal results could vary due to myriad reasons. However, we have found our customers prefer to hear a decibel reduction rather than read it!

We stand for quality, and we are proud of it.

Directly fitted to the concrete slab, this system provides a high performance against airborne and impact noise. Perfect for soundproofing the home where the loss of room height is a concern.

MuteClipยฎ Concrete Double is our best and most popular option for projects that require a ceiling soundproofing solution for concrete that is both high-performing and space conscious at only 75mm. It creates fewer points of contact with concrete soffit ceilings using our MuteClipยฎ which is composed of a dual-density rubber in a galvanised metal case that performs like a shock absorber.

The MuteClipยฎ Channel then affixes to the MuteClipยฎ and the new soundproof ceiling composed of two dense layers of  Acoustic Plasterboard 15mm and a layer of Tecsound suspends away from the concrete slab resulting in a vastly improved reduction of airborne noise. Particular focus is given on the problematic lower to middle-lower frequencies, as well as reducing impact noise and other forms of light vibration which are often problematic in concrete constructions.

Advice and installation

Our team are always a phone call away ready to offer advice and support. Our systems can be installed by competent DIYers but if you would like to work with an installer we have relationships with installers up and down the UK that we can put you in touch with.

  • Easy to install, no incorrect fixing or shortages, unlike standard Resilient Channel.
  • System thickness from the existing ceiling 74mm
  • 64dB* for airborne (where a higher number is desired)
  • 43dB* for impact (where a lower number is desired)
  • Compliant with both Part E Building Regulations(England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland) and Building Standards Technical Handbook 2017 for Scotland for airborne and impact transmission.

Ceiling Stud Center

The ceiling joist center is the distance between ceiling joists measured from the center. The typical ceiling joist is 400mm. If you are working directly on a concrete ceiling we recommend using a 400mm spacing here also.

Ceiling Channel Center

The ceiling channel center is the distance between the MuteClip Channels. The typical channel center is 400mm. If you are working directly on a concrete ceiling we recommend using a 400mm spacing here also.

  • If you have multiple adjacent surfaces or partitions to soundproof input them individually. Not as a total m2 input as this will affect the results.
  • If you have windows, fireplaces or other fixed structures we recommend booking a call with us before purchasing.

Ceiling ‘Width’

For the calculator, the width of a ceiling is the measurement that runs perpendicular to your existing ceiling joists.

Ceiling Joist length

Joist length refers to the measurement that runs parallel with your existing ceiling joists.

With a loss of space giving to only 80mm, MuteClipยฎ Concrete Double comes as one of our most desirable options for balancing the space lost, with the soundproofing qualities it gives to both airborne and impact noise issues from common noise issues in the home. With noise issues that range from airborne from day-to-day conversation to raised television levels, to impact noise of dropping of objects from time to time and walking on hardened flooring from above – this system will help to reduce those issues. One major point to consider in concrete constructions is that it is often found that Flanking Transmission is high in adjacent walls due to the sheer mass, especially where low frequencies noise issues are concerned. We would expect to see a 5-10dB improvement 25-50% reduction of noise issues as a guide, but again, low frequencies and excessive noise issues would require something more robust.

Lowering noise issues can often be difficult when they contain high amounts of low frequency sound energy: the use of subwoofer speakers, the popular soundbars and loud footsteps without any acoustic treatment or isolation from above because of Flanking Transmission in to the walls. Removing noise issues is subjective in that some are content with them reaching a background noise level, which is what all soundproofing systems aim to do in commercial and residential use – complete removal would require heavy isolation which is often incredibly difficult in the home without substantial cost.

When considerations of Flanking sounds have been checked and adequately soundproofed on the adjacent walls, Mute Clipโ„ข Concrete Double can be specified for Part E Building Regulations for conversion projects and residential new builds, both internal dwelling and separate dwellings. It would be important to consider one of our acoustic over screed or under screed during the flooring process above to make sure that the right acoustic treatment and isolation has been given to reduce impact noise issues, which are often the primary issue in concrete constructions.

Resilient Channel does offer decoupling, but not to the same degree as MuteClipยฎ and itโ€™s Channel. The vulnerability in the Resilient Channels design lends itself to a range of potential errors in fixing that can affect acoustic performance. MuteClipยฎ requires only a single fixing, and the Channel snaps on to each row of clip, it cannot be bend, over tightened to the point that it needs to be replaced or short circuited. Beyond this it is also superior in acoustic performance against low frequency sound energy, an important factor in the reduction of impact noise issues, and the reduction of airborne noise issues in excess of this range.

To when Acoustic Plasterboard is in contact with adjacent surfaces that are rigid, this lends itself to being subject to passing of vibration through Flanking Transmission – the aim is to keep as short a distance as possible so that there is no direct contact, abutting them tightly will short circuit both MuteClipยฎ and Channel and will reduce itโ€™s suspension. Leave a gap of this size and use a bead of Acoustic Sealant to reduce airflow in these areas.

Flanking Transmission in adjacent walls can often pass any detected vibration to any other connected surfaces, so if the Acoustic Plasterboard is abutted tightly or even slightly touching across various points, this vibration will return into the acoustic system – short-circuiting the MuteClipยฎ and Channel. Again, if it is tightly abutted to the adjacent surfaces, you are reducing the suspension of the ceiling in which is essential to reduce impact noise and low-frequency transmission – reducing the systemโ€™s performance.

MuteClipยฎ and Channel leaves a void of 41mm in which is suitable for the installation of sound insulation of 25mm or 30mm Acoustic Mineral Wool. Do not use thicker sizes as this will create a path for sound to travel from the concrete substrate and first layer of Acoustic Plasterboard – short circuiting the MuteClipยฎ and Channel’s isolation properties

Any existing ceiling needs to be removed, plasterboard and framework too if it will not support the acoustic system, decoration such as cornice and coving will need to be removed and electronics extended by a Part P Registered electrician before installation so that the acoustic installation team can pull this through the insert hole.
